Albert Einstein, Wayne Dyer, and You

Do you want to be right…

Or do you want to be free…

Albert Einstein has said that you can’t solve a problem with
the same consciousness, or level of thinking, that created it.

And Wayne Dyer has said very powerfully:

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

So my question for you today is, what do you want?

Do you want to prove yourself “right” about the way things are for you…

or…

…as Jesus asked the infirm man at the pool of Bethesda,

“Do you want to be well?”

In coaching clients on their own journey to wellness, as well as
working with myself and with others in the context of a business
to create financial freedom, I find that we’re often attached to
our “story”…our way of looking at things…the way things “are”,
at least from our perspective…and it’s not until we really want
things to be different—more than we want to be “right” about the
way we see things—that we’re open enough to see things a different way…
and thereby to create a different experience…

Often it’s the very questions we’re asking ourselves and others that
show us where we’re coming from…and that powerfully affect where
we’re going…and what we “see”.

What questions are you asking?

Are you asking questions to prove yourself right or someone else wrong…

Or are you asking questions to create a new chosen outcome…

Such as being well…

Or

Being free…

Food for thought…and for creating a different experience…

To your joyful and prosperous well-being,

Dr. Ben

How To Use New Knowledge to Create Real Change…

Ever wonder why you can seemingly learn something great or gain
some great insight, but then nothing really changes in your life
or your experience?

What then is the role of new knowledge, and what is the process of
turning that knowledge into actual change?

Here’s a quick nugget I recently received from a very close friend
and mentor—Artemis Limpert:

Knowledge alone doesn’t change you…

What it can do is give you new perspectives…

…and a new perspective can allow you to see choices you didn’t see before…

…and then changing your choices can change your life.

So there you have it in a nutshell…new knowledge can give you a new perspective,
which enables you to see new choices, and making new choices creates new results…

…which can change your life…

And here are two resources I’ve enjoyed recently that can make you aware of new ways
to look at things, open up new choices for you…and thereby give you the possibility
of co-creating or co-operating with very different experiences and results in your life…

The first is Guy Finley’s Life of Learning Center.

I’d begin with his Welcome Message here (It’s just a few minutes, but takes you
immediately to “another time and place”…)

The second is Joel Osteen, first recommended to me by some “non-religious” friends
who found his messages—–including audio, on TV, and in print—–both relevant
and impactful to their daily lives.

As I was driving back from dropping my oldest daughter off at a friend’s to help with
her horses on Memorial Day, I listened to a few minutes of a recent podcast
(you can subscribe to these for free at here) and was struck by
this shift in perspective:

Everything is not happening TO you, it’s happening FOR you…

Think about that one for a minute.

Everything is not happening TO you, it’s happening FOR you.

Then as you enjoy these and other resources, ask yourself what shifts in perspective
they give you, and what new choices you can make as a result that can change your experience…

…and your life.

Let me know your own experiences, shifts in perspective, and new choices and results in
your comments below.

I look forward to hearing from you!

The Art of Living “Imperfectly”

Yesterday Rachelle gave some fun eating ideas and also touched on a key principle—–
the art of “inner acceptance” and thankfulness.

Today I want to take a couple moments and address this further…

No matter where you are in your health today…

or in any area of your life for that matter…

…beginning from a place of inner acceptance and gratitude feels better now,
and also puts you on a path toward empowering steps you can take to continue
to feel better and better…creating a very different result than frustration, striving,
or feeling that you’re never really doing all that you should…

Yes, I know there may be things you want to change…

Yes, I know there’s always something we could do more or do better…

But what if you start today with the practicing of finding joy and gratitude right now…

What if you find a way to be thankful for the food and drink you take in today…thereby
maximizing it’s benefit and minimizing it’s potential “harm” if it’s not “perfect”, and finding
a little more joy with what you have today?

Then you may find yourself happier with yourself and your life, and also find it
easier to then choose a “next step” that may take you a little further into health—
maybe it’s eating a “healthy snack” of a piece of fruit or vegetable, or taking a few
moments in the sunshine—–a “life-affirming” step—that over time adds up to a
healthy and vibrant life…and you feel good along the way.

Practice the art of being “perfectly imperfect”, and finding joy and thanksgiving
each day of your journey to wellness.

Though seemingly simple, this daily practice of acceptance, thankfulness, and
then openness to “what’s next” can have a profound impact on your life.

So practice daily, enjoy the journey, and share your own comments and questions below.

For a complete system of “life-affirming” steps with both specific, practical nutritional
and health guidance, as well as key “inner” principles for approaching your own health
and well-being in just minutes a day, you can visit Your Journey To Wellness With Dr. Ben.

And if you’re ready to take a further step and want the guidance of working together
one-on-one over an extended period of time together, I’m about to open three more
spots for my personal mentoring program.

This program is not for everybody, in that I’m only looking to work directly with a few
people who are ready to really change specific patterns in their thinking and habits to
progressively transform their health and how they feel during the weeks we work together,
and to develop strategies they can use to continue to transform their health…and their life…
long after we’ve finished working directly together.

If you’re ready to take this step and commit to yourself to discover and accelerate healthy
change (yes, a word many people subconsciously fear!), you can call or email me directly
(1-888-909-6601 or drben@doctorbenlo.com ) for a personal interview
to see if you qualify and if this would be a match for you.

Either way—whether indirectly through Your Journey To Wellness, or directly
via one-on-one mentoring, I look forward to working with you and hearing
about the wonderful changes you step into for the rest of 2008!

Healthy Food From Wal-Mart? From Mrs. Lo, the Cottage Coach

I have a confession to make.

I buy groceries at Wal-Mart.

What…Dr. “Wellness” Ben’s wife does that?  I thought they were health nuts.

I know when I think of good old American Wal-Mart, I picture carts full of Doritos,
Little Debbies, Wonder Bread and Dr. Pepper.

But that’s not what we’re talking about here.

We like to eat nourishing food, we have a large hungry family, and we live 60 miles from
the nearest Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

A Super Wal-Mart opened up a few months ago and I discovered that I save ALOT of money
over our smaller local market. We are talking up to 60 – 80 bucks a week.

Now I still support our local market, but I am finding that the sheer bulk of our grocery list
inspires a little creativity these days.

We are still eating quite well and I thought I would share a few ideas of healthy choices EVEN from Wal-Mart.

Plus it gives me an excuse to bring up an issue that I think it is vital to remember:

That it is OKAY to not eat perfectly all the time.

It is OKAY to celebrate the stages of our life that might seem limiting…

like the fact that I am pregnant with number six and we live out in the country.

And THE most important thing you and I can do is start from a place of Self Acceptance AND Thankfulness.

I have found my life is more fulfilling and what I truly want it to be when I come from a place
of inner acceptance.

It is okay that we eat white flour here and again.

It is okay that not everything is organic.  We will have more time for that in the future.

It is great that we are increasing our veggies whenever we can.

I find that NO lasting and healthy change comes from negative thinking and forcing myself.

What about you?

So now let me give you a few ideas for nourishing and energizing meals.

Easy one.

Wal-Mart carries Omega Eggs and Cage Free eggs.  They are around $2.25 a doz.

I scramble them with provolone cheese (deli sliced in a package) and any veggies I have on hand.

The kids really like the taste.   Top with tomatoes and add a handful of fresh lettuce or greens.

Ben and I don’t eat too much bread, but I’ll toast some with whole grain in it for the kids. I’ll
eat toast if I really have the hankering for it.  The store also carries fruit sweetened Jams.
Lovely with a cup of Irish Breakfast Tea.   Yum!

Number Two.

Tofu, Bok Choi and Rice

I know there is some controversy about soy, but at times we still eat tofu.
We like the taste and the break from meat.

I like to get two or three small plastic tubs where the tofu is sealed in water. I use Extra Firm.
I take the hunk of tofu out and dice it into small square pieces.  Then wrap it in a clean towel
and gently squeeze out the excess water.

Then I marinade it.  Wal-Mart has several different sauces you can use.  Try what sounds good to you.
I’ve used Hoisin Ginger.  Some can be really sweet so you don’t have to use a lot.

If you are watching your sugar, then try tamari or soy sauce with lots of minced garlic.
It is simple but yummy.

Let the marinade soak for about an hour.

I usually cook it under the broiler in a 9×13 pan until brown and a bit crispy.

Wal-Mart has Jasmine rice and brown rice.  Make what you like.  You can use whole grain spaghetti noodles
if that sounds good to you.

We eat our Bok Choi raw.  It is so refreshing and I am glad to have the enzymes.  Napa or Chinese Cabbage
is also delicious raw.

Okay…last one.

Asparagus wraps.

My friend told me how to roast asparagus so it stays crisp and tastes fabulous!!!!

Be careful.  It is addictive.

Heat oven to 400 degrees.   Clean and pat dry asparagus.  In a bowl toss the stalks with olive oil,
sea salt and cracked pepper.

Place in a 9×13 pan.  Cook for about 12 minutes.  Take it out and test it.  See if it is how you like it.

I like to eat asparagus with poached eggs, with chicken or fish, or just as a snack.

But I really like it for a tea meal in a wrap.  Buy whole grain tortillas or authentic flour tortillas.
Spread mayo on tortilla and lay down some cucumber slices and your favorite cheese.  I like a shredded
Italian blend or Muenster.  Then lay down 2 or 3 stalks of asparagus.  Roll up and eat with a healthy
TLC brand cookie and a cup of tea.

Wherever you shop…

Enjoy and celebrate where you are…right now.

Blessings!

Music For Your Soul…

Recently I enjoyed watching the movie August Rush with my family, and was caught up in the music and modern fairy-tale-like story.  After watching the movie, I mentioned to my wife Rachelle that though the events in the story seemed very miraculous and wondrous to those of us watching…to the actual characters in the story, much of their path seemed painful, confusing, and at times like it almost could have turned out very differently at certain critical moments.  This made me wonder about our own lives, and reminded me of Einstein’s thought—that either everything is a miracle, or nothing is…

After watching the movie, I hopped on over to Amazon and downloaded “August’s Rhapsody”–an amazing piece of music that is tied together throughout the film and then provides a final unified piece at the end…I’ve listened to this 7 minute piece again and again…each time it carries me through a series of soaring emotions and lifts me out of the mundane or “task-oriented” world I may be caught in at the moment.

Music is a powerful way to tap into different vibrations and shift how you feel almost instantaneously, and this piece in particular is remarkable in its ability to do so in an uplifting and powerful way–with a very pertinent 2-sentence message from August himself just as the music ends.

You can sample the music here, and get your own copy for just 99 cents–a great value for over 7 minutes of music that will lift your soul.

Enjoy, and leave your own comments and experiences with music below!

For Expecting Parents & Nursing Moms…

From time to time I get questions about pregnancy and birth, and the different options, choices, and decisions that arise.

Despite all the “science” and technology that now surround us, many parents intuitively sense that there may be answers for them that are more simple and yet more profoundly impactful than what technology alone can measure or medical science can tell them.

My wife and I have experienced this firsthand ourselves with our first 5 children, all of whom were born at home (after the first birth, Rachelle said just knowing she could get up and use the bathroom whenever she wanted was a big “plus”, not to mention being in her own bed and comfy chair and being waited on hand and foot right after the birth…), and I’ve also counseled many couples and worked with 100’s of deliveries both at home and in the hospital.

And now as Rachelle and I are expecting #6, and all the kids can eagerly feel her “kicking”, we again enter the mystery of what happens in the womb and at birth.

Last night Rachelle told me she’s been talking to “Ginny”, and wrote out some affirmations for the two of them for the birth, realizing that that will be a special time of their first “partnering” together as mother and child—in the powerful act of birth.

Given these experiences, and knowing there are many out there who would love to bounce ideas and questions off us from both a “professional” and personal perspective, we thought we’d find out how many are actually readers of this blog and the Dr. Ben email letter, and whether we could serve them in some way.

So…if you’re an expecting parent, or a nursing mom—that also is a wonderful journey that can generate much question and mystery—and you’d like to talk directly, simply say so in the comments below, and even leave a question or topic that you would love addressed.

If there’s enough interest, Rachelle and I may host an open teleconference call in the next week or two to connect with you all and address your questions.

Much love and blessings to you all!

“Psychological Sunshine”

As we’re about to begin another weekend, I wanted to share a wonderful term I picked up from David Schwartz, Ph.D., in his book The Magic Of Thinking Big:

“Psychological Sunshine”

In the book, Dr. Schwartz gives an example of two different people and how they spend their weekends.

I don’t have the exact details in front of me, but it went something like this:

Person A, let’s  call him Joe, is exhausted from his week at work.  He wakes up late on Saturday, watches TV and drinks beer, he and his wife ask each other what they’d like to do…they don’t know, so they watch some more TV….Sunday’s the same…they’re too tired to see anyone or do anything…and when Monday rolls around, they still feel tired and dread another week of work.

Person B, let’s call him Jim, gets some errands done on Saturday, and then he and his wife have some friends over that they’ve been wanting to meet, and they enjoy having good conversation together.  On Sunday, they plan a family outing — a hike outdoors where they get some exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and have some relaxed time together as a family.

When Monday rolls around, Jim feels refreshed and ready to dive into a new week.  He enjoyed plenty of “psychological sunshine” on the weekend.

Dr. Schwartz also talks about giving your family the gift of  “planned” time together…and I’ll add that this “planning” can apply to your own personal time as well…

And it doesn’t have to be sunny outside….last Friday night, I was actually feeling a little tired and I’ll admit, a little grumpy as the day was coming to an end and I was feeling like I’d missed an opportunity to have some quality time with my family.  My oldest daughter was helping out at a friend’s house, and my wife suggested I take our middle two out to town on the way to pick our eldest up while my wife herself gave our youngest two a bath.

Just as dusk was setting in, we drove to our little harbor town on Lake Michigan, and as we approached, my daughter stated with enthusiasm how much she loved walking in town just as the lights were coming on.  As we walked by the lighted shops, most of which were closed, Emmie, who can only see some light and color, would ask what each shop was.  When we walked past the South Bend Chocolate Company Cafe (which was still open), my son Henri asked if we could step inside, and Emmie agreed.  When I asked, “Why?”, Emmie said, “So we can look at the chocolates…”  I commented that she couldn’t see the chocolates, but she just smiled and we went inside.

We were the last customers in the store, and after hearing a description of some of the things on display, we ended up getting two chocolate covered oreos–one for each of them.  As we stepped outside with the little paper bag, both Henri and Emmie were very excited, and Emmie later told me she was trying to get me to get them something without actually asking directly…

We then walked to the harbor where there’s a grassy hill, and as a breezy, cloudy night was coming on, we ran and rolled down the hill a number of times.  We then walked back to the car together just as it was starting to sprinkle.

I mention this story because it was a brief but very special time for the three of us–a memory we created together that we’ve already talked about several times since–and one that occurred when moments before it looked like the day was “over”, at least from my perspective.

That outing–on a cloudy end of the day–became a significant source of psychological sunshine for us that set our direction that weekend.

So how about for you?

What experiences are you allowing yourself and your family?

As illustrated above, something seemingly small can turn into something precious…

So enjoy some “psychological sunshine” this weekend, and let me know your own experiences in the comments below.

“I am willing to change…”

Sometimes the biggest key to our healing is a willingness to change…

Now that may sound obvious, but let me ask you this:

In seeking to “get well”, have you had certain “parameters” around how the “answers”
and the “healing” could come to you?

How about with your money situation…

Again, have you held certain “fixed” ideas about how things would have to be,
or what would “have to” happen for things to get better?

For example, I spoke with someone yesterday who’s been searching for answers
to a physical condition for many years.

Let’s call her Carole (not her real name).

And in searching, Carole has undergone numerous tests and treatments—–both medical and “alternative”, but she’s frustrated because her condition continues.

What I realized in talking with Carole is that for her “healing” to come, the first thing
she’ll want to do is to let go of her attachment to how that healing would come—
the form in which it “should” come—–in this case, in the form of tests, diagnoses, and “treatments”, even though each of these may play a role.

I once heard about a practitioner in California who saw numerous clients
whose conditions had failed to respond to any kind of “ordinary treatment”,
and were at the end of their rope.

When they came to see him and asked him if he could help them, he would answer,
“If your problem is real, I can’t help you.  But if it isn’t, I can.”

Now at first this response may come as a shock…and in a sense, that’s what
it was intended to do—–to shock the person into a whole different paradigm,
a whole different way of looking at things—–from which standpoint their “healing”
could begin.

Sometimes with all of our seeking after tests, diagnoses, and treatments, we’re
“locking in” the “realness” of our condition…and keeping it there the way it is…

So today’s discussion is really a continuation of last week’s—–that the single
biggest factor in your healing is ultimately *YOU*—what beliefs are you rigidly
holding on to? and what are you willing to “release” in order to see things a
different way, and perhaps be given a whole new perspective that opens up
new possibilities for you…

a new way for you to be…

and a new experience of your body, your health, your money, or some other area of your life.

I’ll wrap up today with a phrase from Louise Hay that a wonderful client of mine used
in coaching someone else this week.

It’s an affirmation that’s really the starting point for all healing to begin:

“I am willing to change.”

If you want something to be different in your life, it all starts with you.

So are you willing?

Are you willing to change?

Play with this affirmation this week:

I am willing to change.

And see what comes up for you…

Here’s to a prosperous and blessed week,

Dr. Ben

P.S.  Each month I have space to work with a few clients one-on-one by phone

coaching session is done.  If you’re ready to explore investing in yourself
at this level, you can call me at 1-888-909-6601 to schedule a free 10 minute
coaching evaluation by phone.  If this proves a match for you, you can get on

Natural Healing: Practicing Life-Affirming Steps and Creating A “Happy, Healthy Atmosphere” For Your Cells

I’ve been pulling together some different material lately,
and while lying in bed with my wife and a couple of my kids
the other morning, I had a couple thoughts I wanted to share
with you.  Jotted them down, but didn’t get them on the blog
until today.

Firstly, a good friend just loaned Louise Hay’s wonderful little
I Can Do It book and CD to my wife Rachelle,
and after listening a bit, Rachelle shared with me a  thought
from Louise on health that immediately caught my attention:

Take simple steps to give your cells a “happy, healthy atmosphere”.

Today I want to combine this thought with one we’ve touched on
previously — what’s the single biggest factor that affects
your health?

Hint:  it’s got 3 letters…

And it’s not something you take or do…

It’s YOU.

Author Gregg Braden has several books out, including his newest one
The Spontaneous Healing of Belief: Shattering the Paradigm of False Limits, that make
accessible the large amounts of scientific research supporting the idea that our attention — and our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs — physically affect the molecules and space we live in and interact with.

So the biggest factor in your healing is not what supplement you
take or what treatment you engage in…

…but rather…

   **YOU**

That’s why you can have someone who’s not “doing everything right” (e.g.,  nutritionally),
but who’s happy and joyful and taking a few simple steps that give their
cells a “healthy environment” who’s thriving…

…while on the other hand, someone else who IS “doing everything right”
but feeling stressed that “there’s so much to do” and that they might not be
“doing enough”, continues to be ill…

This may not seem “fair” until you realize how things work, and that we all
get to choose every day which path we’ll take — one of struggle and fear,
or one of trust, love, and joy.

So practice taking simple steps to give your cells a “happy, healthy atmosphere” —
Gregg Braden calls these “life-affirming steps” — and then magnify them with
a joyful, grateful attitude.

To your abundant well-being,

Dr. Ben

Natural Healing: “Why Am I Sabotaging Myself?”

Today one of my private coaching clients asked the question:

“Why am I sabotaging myself?”

Ever wonder that yourself?

Why you don’t do what you know you “should” to allow things to change?

Well, let’s hop back into our forest analogy from last week

Imagine you’re in a forest, and you suddenly realize you’re not where you want to be, and you’re heading somewhere you don’t want to go…

And let’s say you get a glimpse—perhaps from a map, sign, brief hilltop view, or outside input—of the direction you do want to head to get where you do want to be.

Well, at this point, if your goal is to get somewhere else, let me ask you this:

Is it more productive to ask why you’re where you are in the forest…

Or…

To simply start heading in the new direction you now realize you want to take?

Think about that for a moment…

Now back to “real” life.

We’re not actually in a forest…so what does heading in a new direction “look” like in our experience?

It looks like new patterns…new steps…that we practice daily.

Once you realize you want to change the direction your body, your health, or some other aspect of your life (money, relationships, etc.) is heading, then the next step is to ask yourself,

What is one step I could take today to start heading in this new direction…

to start creating a new pattern…

that if continued and practiced daily…

will lead me to a new “place”…a new result—or experience—in my health, my body, or my life?

Then take that step…

And practice it daily…

Until you’ve created a new pattern…

And begin experiencing a new result.

Let me know your own experiences, comments, and questions below.

And have a blessed and wonderful week!

Dr. Ben
