Natural Healing by Being Influenced “For Good”

A couple weeks ago I sent my  Road Map To Health readers a
link to a song “For Good” on YouTube that moved me, and it elicited
quite a response from some of them, too.

Shortly after that, while speaking to about 800 people at a
“business” conference, I ended my talk by saying how much I
had been changed “for good” by the people there that had come
into my life, and then I asked everyone to close their eyes…

…and I played a clip of my 8 year old daughter
Emmie singing that same song…

And in seconds, many that were there got in touch with something
deep inside themselves and were even moved to tears…

Now why I am sharing this here?

I’m realizing that whether it’s with our health, our business or
work, or our relationships, it’s our ability to get in touch with
something meaningful beyond the “noise” of our daily burdens
and tasks that feeds our spirit, inspires us, and moves us to
embrace a life of meaning, purpose, wholeness, and joy.

And it’s our ability to influence ourselves, by opening our hearts
and allowing ourselves to be moved, that can bring great
healing to ourselves and others.

What Do You Want to Change?

Today I have several questions for you:

What do you want to be different in your life or your
health this year?

What do you want to change?

Are you willing to change?

Recently I heard an interview of a remarkable gentleman
named Jett, and a particular phrase leaped out at me:

If you want things to change, you have to change!

As I coach people, I have discovered two major areas that
keep people from making the changes in their health that
they desire: 

The first is not knowing what to do, and in
many cases this appears as being overwhelmed with
information without the wisdom or discernment to know how
to apply it in a useful framework;

and the second—many have some
idea of what would make a difference, but fail to take the
steps necessary to create the results they desire.

In these weekly letters, we will seek to address both.

This week’s exercise will involve two steps:  first, decide
what you want to be different for you this year—do you want
more energy? Better nutrition?  Less stress?  To release
weight?  To feel better?  To decrease your use of
medications?

Decide what you want. 

Write it down. 

Now rephrase it in present tense using “I am…”  “I love…”
“I feel…”  and write down a few such statements, or
affirmations, that describe how you want to be and feel
even though you may not actually be there yet.

Examples might include:

I awaken with joy and energy.  I love how
I feel.  I love my life. 

I now lovingly nourish myself and release the weight I
no longer require.

Whatever you choose to write, read these statements at
least twice a day when you first arise and just before you
go to bed.

Second, ask yourself before going to bed tonight, what’s
one thing you could do tomorrow that would bring you closer
to what you want?

If an answer comes, great!  Commit to
doing it.  If not, go to sleep with the question open, and
see what comes to you when you awake.

Simple steps?  Yes!  Yet powerful tools that will assist
you in effecting any change you desire in your life.

Will you commit to doing this now?  How about tomorrow?  How
about each day for the next three weeks?

If you do, you will find you have begun a simple process that can be
applied again and again with huge results!

and heart trouble, I looked up this affirmation for heart
trouble in Louise Hay’s book Heal Your Body: 

Joy. Joy. Joy.  I lovingly allow joy to flow through my
mind and body and experience.

A great affirmation for all who struggle with stress,
health issues, or lack of joy!

Embracing your imperfections…

Recently a close friend sent me this video, which is emotional and moving.

Then just this past week, I watched it again during a leadership training event with a good friend and mentor, Artemis Limpert, and she gave a particular perspective that made this video even more poignant, and moved me to share it with you here.

As you watch this, rather than just being a “spectator” and seeing this as something curious and unusual though impressive, try watching it with this thought in mind:

What if you could learn to embrace your own imperfections…making them part of your story, part of your “humanness”…

We all probably have things about ourselves we don’t like…whether physical or something less tangible and non-physical.

 What if we could learn to embrace even those parts of ourselves–or our “journey” through them–and make them part of our story so that no only do we find triumph and joy, but we bless others as well?

Curing Health “Excusitis”

Yesterday I was reading a wonderful book from the 50’s called The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz, and a particular section on “health excusitis” caught my eye.  Here’s an excerpt:

” ‘Bad’ health, in a thousand different forms, is used as an excuse for failing to do what a person wants to do, failing to accept greater responsibilities, failing to make more money, failing to achieve success.”

Dr. Schwartz goes on to give several examples of different responses to “bad” health, and then he gives “four things you can do to lick health excusitis” that I thought you’d want to read if you don’t want your health to keep you from doing what you want in life:

 “1)  Refuse to talk about your health.  The more you talk about an ailment, even the common cold, the worse it seems to get.  Talking about bad health is like putting fertilizer on weeds.  Besides, talking about your health is a bad habit.  It bores people.  It makes one appear self-centered and old-maidish.  Success-minded people defeat the natural tendency to talk about their “bad” health.  One may (and let me emphasize the word may) get a little sympathy, but one doesn’t get respect and loyalty by being a chronic complainer.

 2)  Refuse to worry about your health…

3)  Be genuinely grateful that your health is as good as it is…

 4)  Remind yourself often, “It’s better to wear out than rust out…”

Along that last line, I love his admonishment to “live until I die.”

Who Are You?

I’m in Dallas and just had a quick moment to write a note on a fascinating way of looking at an intriguing question that I heard yesterday.

The question is this:

 Who are you?

Pause a moment…

What comes to mind when you first “hear” that question?

Well, here’s a new answer I heard from Jerry Clark yesterday:

Possibility manifested.

Consider this a moment.

 What if your health, your current condition, your diagnosis, or whatever you’re experiencing now, is just one “possibility manifested”?

What if you could learn to manifest a different possibility, instead of continually re-inforcing and re-living the one you’re experiencing now?

Intriguing…

What Is “Wellness”?

Not long ago I gave a talk at our local library.  On the left
side of a white board, I wrote the following words:

Diagnosis
Symptom
Illness
Treatment
Pain

I then drew a vertical line, and on the right side of the
board, I wrote the words:

Wellness
Wholeness
Life
Health
Healing

I then asked the group how they felt as they read each set
of words, and which side of the board they wanted to be on.

How do you feel when you read these words? 

Driving home from an early morning on the beach this week,
I heard Lynn Grabhorn say on a tape of her book Excuse Me
Your Life Is Waiting,

“…it’s fashionable to talk about
what’s wrong with everything instead of what’s right…”,
and I stopped to write this statement down. 

Focusing on what’s wrong is exactly what we’re trained to
do in medicine, which is where most of us turn when we’re
concerned about our health. 

For just a moment, pull up a chair and join me as we explore
new ways to think about your health.

For a moment, forget your diagnosis, your abnormal lab test,
your medications and questions, and your fears.

If you are reading this, you are living and breathing,
and there is an aliveness about you that can be fanned
in to vitality and health.

Let’s begin by shifting your focus…

What are you thankful for?

What’s going well with your body,
your health,
your life?

What did you do well today?

Did you get out of bed–celebrate that!

Did you eat or drink something nourishing–celebrate that.

Did you walk, work out, or exercise in some fashion–celebrate that!

You may be saying, “Yeah, but I still feel lousy” or “My doctor
still says my cholesterol’s too high”–or maybe it’s your
blood pressure or your blood sugar.

That’s okay–that’s where you are today.  That’s your
starting point–but it doesn’t have to be your endpoint
unless you do nothing to change.

However, if you’re with me this far, you’re reading because
you want to change–you want an answer other than what
you’ve gotten so far.  You want to stop focusing on what’s
wrong, and begin to take note of what’s right,
and build on that.

So let’s begin.

Pick one thing you did that was healthy
today, even if it was simply that you took a breath.
Celebrate that, commend yourself, and then choose one thing
that you will do tomorrow for your health.  Will you go
outside for a walk, will you eat an apple, will you do
something else you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t done
yet?

Take that first step.

As we journey together, we will discuss concrete steps
you can take, and I will direct you to some terrific resources.

For today, begin by shifting your focus.

Begin to take note of what’s going well,
and choose something life-giving to do tomorrow.

Day #7 What About Supplements?

Welcome to Day #7!

Today we’ll switch gears further from thoughts and beliefs to
something else concrete–supplementation, particularly
vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and Omega 3 fatty acids, all
of which are key for optimal health.

But first, why supplement?

Don’t we get enough from our food?

Well, how well do you eat?

Be honest with yourself.

Do you get plenty of color, plenty of raw, organic fruits and
vegetables and raw, whole, or unprocessed food throughout the
day?

Most people don’t, and for those of you that do, how’s your
health and how do you feel?

In this day and age, with the multiple environmental and social
stresses on us we often need something extra to keep us healthy,
even when we’re eating well, and to support us when we’re not.

For many people, their bodies are like checking accounts for
which they’re writing more checks than deposits every month.

For awhile, they get away with this until the reserves are
used up and checks start to bounce.

This is when you notice you’re stiff the day after playing ball,
or your knees are starting to ache, or your eyes don’t see as
well–things we normally attribute to aging and assume we just
have to live with.

But what if you could start depositing more than you’re taking
out?

What if you could start giving your body concentrations of high
quality nutrients that your body could use as raw ingredients
to function better and heal itself?

This is what quality supplementation provides–a concentrated
extract of desired nutrients.

A simple example of this is juicing raw fruits and vegetables
